Lord, I Am Not Worthy to Receive You…

Men who came to Jesus: The Roman Soldier

MY daily reflection and prayer:

Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

Dear my friends,
Here is the Gospel for us today according to St. Matthew 8:5-17

As he entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion answered him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, `Go,’ and he goes, and to another, `Come,’ and he comes, and to my  slave, `Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and served him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

***

The story of the centurion, an officer of the Roman army who came forward to Jesus, beseeching him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress” is very interesting. He came to Jesus not for himself but for the sake of his servant who was lying paralyzed at his home, in terrible distress.

Jesus’ respond was also very extraordinary. He warmly received him and said to him, “I will come and heal him.” And the centurion’s respond to Jesus was more extraordinary. He answered Jesus, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, `Go,’ and he goes, and to another, `Come,’ and he comes, and to my  slave, `Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard him, he praised him as a model of faith and confidence for us all. So Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” It’s why, we are always following his faith in the Mass Celebration. Before receiving the Holy Communion, we pray, “Lord, (Jesus Christ,) I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word and I shall be healed.”

In the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist we learn from the Roman centurion who approached Jesus with  courageous heart and faith-filled. We pray to Jesus Christ, “Lord, Jesus Christ, I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word and I shall be healed. We ask him to heal us from our sin. We also learn to pray not only for ourselves but also for the sake of others, especially the oppressed and the poor.

Let’s pray: Lord, Jesus Christ, we are not worthy to receive you but only say the word and we shall be healed. Please, heal us from our sin. Heal and free also this world from the tyranny of sin, hatred and death. May we serve others with generosity and mercy now and forever. Amen.
